Mehmet Yılmaz, President of the Gold Miners Association and Chairman of TÜPRAG, announced Turkey's first five-year mining course. Yılmaz drew particular attention to the emphasis on "mining" in the 12th Development Plan and the Medium Term Program (MTP), which includes the main macroeconomic targets. Stating that the mining route set in the new century of the Republic has created excitement in the sector, Yılmaz said that the mining sector, which has an import burden of 60 billion dollars in Turkey's foreign trade deficit, is targeting 15 billion dollars in exports and 60 tons of gold production annually in the first 5 years.
On December 4, World Miners' Day, Yılmaz made important statements about the sector, sharing Turkey's new mining route drawn on the axis of sustainable mining principles and drawing attention to the green transformation in the global mining sector. Yılmaz also evaluated Turkey's potential in critical minerals used in green transformation, the demand for which has more than doubled in the last 5 years.
Rüstem Çetinkaya, Chairman of the Mining Sector Board of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Istanbul Mineral Exporters' Association (İMİB), made statements on the occasion of December 4, World Miners' Day, stating that Turkey is a country with big goals and that they are ready to do their part as miners to achieve these goals. Çetinkaya said, "We are a country with great riches. As much as our riches above the ground, we also have a magnificent wealth under the ground. If our country is to reach the level of contemporary civilizations that Mustafa Kemal Ataturk targeted, we, as miners, will be at the heart of it. We miners, who struggle hard to bring the riches under the ground together with the surface of the earth, will continue to do so. We will work for our country and bring our country to its goals."
Emiroğlu, President of the Turkish Miners Association (TMD), stated that the Turkish mining sector has an extremely important position in global markets and said, "Mining is the only sector that can close Turkey's current account deficit."
Speaking to AA correspondent on December 4, World Miners' Day, TMD Chairman Emiroğlu said that new high quality and high grade zinc reserves have recently been identified in the Eastern and Southern Anatolia regions and the operation phase has started.
Stating that the country's gold production has increased compared to last year, Emiroğlu noted that a new copper reserve was found in the Elazığ region and that this is an important resource for the country.
Unfortunately, the mining sector in our country provides added value to our economy far below its potential. Of course, many reasons can be cited, but the first ones that come to mind are the following;
The first Turkey Historical Mines Conference, which was hosted by the Department of Mining Engineering of Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon in 2015, will be held in Edirne between May 8-10, 2024 this year.
